Betty Jane (Blanchet) DePriest of Bedford

Betty Jane (Blanchet) DePriest of Bedford died at home on Wednesday, November 9, 2016. She was 88 years old.

She was the beloved mother of Brigadier General (Ret.) Oscar S. DePriest IV DMD and his wife Susan of Bedford, Dr. Charles V. DePriest and his wife Kyong of TN, and Philip R. DePriest and Valeria Mac of IL. Loving grandmother of Jaclyn, Patrick, Charles, and Theresa DePriest. She is also survived by a great-grandson Maxim, a cousin, and several nieces and nephews.

Visiting hours were held in Shawsheen Funeral Home on Tuesday, November 15, 2016.

Few of us get to meet a real hero; fewer get to be raised by one. Betty DePriest was smart, funny and beloved by everyone lucky enough to meet her. She raised three great men, alone, in the 60s. She made us who we are.

Born in Chicago during the Great Depression, she could never keep enough good in her refrigerator. You had to eat when you visited her.

She made a very loving home for us, but she was all about getting up when life knocked you down. She raised three men tough enough to be gentle.

She endured more than her share of tragedy, losing her Silver Star-winning brother in WWII and her sister to cancer. But her love of family, and her faith in God somehow gave her the strength not only to go on, but to love life without bitterness and instill in all of us a gratitude for every day we have together.

And I know it may sound greedy to want more days with a person who lived so long, but the fact that Betty was 88 does not diminish, it only magnifies the enormity of the power of a woman who was simply awesome.

Betty remained lucid until the day she died and spoke to her sons daily. We were the light of her life, and she let us know it every day. If you knew her, rejoice in your fortune, for you were blessed.

She was special.

LouisGentile.jpg

Louie was born in Belmont on January 10, 1932 to the late Biagio and Mary Gentile. He grew up in Belmont before joining the U.S. Air Force in 1952. During the summer of 1954, while serving at Hunter AFB, in Savannah, GA, he met Ella Jo Davis of Delbarton, WV. They married on October 1, 1955 in Savannah, GA.

A devoted military man of 20 years, assignments brought Louie and his family throughout the U.S., during which he proudly served remote tours in the Korean and Vietnam conflicts. In 1972, after retiring from the Air Force, Louie settled his family in Bedford and moved into a second career as a USPS letter carrier for the towns of Weston and Wellesley Hills.

After retiring from the Post Office in 1992, Louie and Ella enjoyed many trips all over the U.S., visiting their children and grandchildren, proud of their individual accomplishments.

When not traveling, Louie spent early mornings with his breakfast buddies, swapping stories and poking fun at each other.  In his younger days, Louie loved bowling, golf, and enjoyed the occasional after-dinner liquor with aged cheese and Italian sausage. He also loved working in the yard and growing vegetables in his backyard garden. And as always, he was a lifetime Boston Red Sox and New England Patriots fan who rarely missed a game.

Salvatore "Sal" George Mazzotta of Bedford

Salvatore SalGeorge Mazzotta, age 75, died Thursday, October 13, 2016 in his home of 46 years in Bedford.

Sal.jpg

Sal was born in Middletown, CT and at age two moved with his family to Hyattsville, MD.  Summers were spent at the beach with his large family in Westbrook and Old Saybrook, CT where he loved to fish, swim, water ski and pilot his grandfather’s 16’ Lyman boat, Bella.

On September 17, 1956, within weeks of the family returning to Middletown, Sal, then 15 years old, was injured while participating in a high school football practice. At that time his type of injury was often fatal; expectations for those who did survive were guarded at best. Sal endured over a year’s worth of recovery, therapy and rehabilitation before returning to and completing high school. During this time he learned to drive with hand controls installed on his mother’s Ford station wagon, quite an achievement for a quadriplegic in those days.

Sal recently celebrated the 60th anniversary of the accident that left him paralyzed. Although his body was confined to a wheelchair, his mind and spirit were sharp and determined. He did not allow his injury to define him and quietly defied the conventional thinking of what a person in a wheelchair could or should expect for their life.

Sal graduated from M.I.T. with both a Bachelors and a Masters degree in Civil Engineering. He often recounted his experience working with an early computer at M.I. T. that was roughly the size of a basketball court and barely had the processing power of a 'flip phone' from the 1990s.

While completing his master’s degree Sal met Libby Knickerbocker Weatherbee who was completing a masters degree in teaching at Harvard. They married in 1967 and after moving to Bedford, adopted their son Matthew. Libby was a high school Spanish teacher and devoted wife and mother until losing her battle with cancer in 1982.

Sal’s career began at a prestigious Boston area structural design firm, LeMessurier Consultants. He worked as an engineer and had a key role in creating ground breaking design and drafting integrations with computers used throughout the company. LeMessurier’s worked on many projects in the Boston area including designing a damper solution that would stabilize the Hancock Building thus preventing motion sickness for upper story occupants along with other structural concerns. When you see the Hancock Building or visit the New England Aquarium, the Boston Federal Reserve or New Boston Garden, think of Sal!

In the early 90s, Sal was laid off and found employment through the Software Fellowship, a social program that created software career opportunities for those skilled but not accredited in the field. Sal was first paired with and later joined Lotus Development Corporation in 1991. Remaining at the company when it was acquired by IBM, he was a successful systems architect until retirement. Sal always enjoyed the act of working in a team, problem-solving, and the pride of a job well done.

In his retirement Sal could often be found reading any of three or four books at one time, debating and opining on Facebook or solving the worlds problemswhile having a meal with dear friends. He recently attended a family wedding where he was able to enjoy time with three generations of his family.

An avid reader, Sal was a strong supporter of the Bedford Public Library. In lieu of flowers please support the library through the fund that has been set up in his name (Bedford Free Public Library, 7 Mudge Way Bedford, MA 01730, Att: Richard Callaghan in memory of Salvatore Mazzotta)

Sal leaves his mother, Gertrude Mazzotta; his son, Matthew; his siblings, Larry, Angela and Camilla; cousins, nieces and nephews; and many close friends saddened by this loss. A Celebration of Lifewill be announced in the coming weeks.

Dan was an avid reader, skier and loved to travel to different ski mountains and also took many trips to the island of Kauai, Hawaii with his best friend Mike Verissimo. Dan was a resident of Falmouth for 15 years.

Edith E. (Pavey) Cooper of Bedford

Edith Elizabeth (Pavey) Cooper of Bedford died on September 26, 2016.

She was born to the late Maynard Hopkins Metcalf and Edith Dorothy (Benson) on March 12, 1923 in Cambridge on Lopes Street. She was later adopted by her aunt and uncle, Lottie Blanche (Benson) and John Pavey and she considered them her parents. They lived in Billerica and later moved to Winthrop, where they lived at 94 Cottage Avenue on the hill over-looking the future Logan International Airport.

Elizabeth graduated from Winthrop High School in 1939 after meeting two life-long friends, Grace (Holland) Tobey and Ann Ridgway. She worked at John Hancock Insurance Co., where she did coding and met George E. Cooper. They were married June 17, 1944.

George had big plans to build his own home so they bought a two-acre lot in Lexington, hand-cleared the trees and shrubs, dug the cellar with pick, shovels, and wheelbarrow. Once the foundation had been laid, block-by-block, and the first floor completed, the family moved into the cellar where Elizabeth cooked over a wood-burning stove and heated the old flat iron on the stove to iron clothes. Eventually, the house was finished and she had an electric range, washer and dryer, a dishwasher, gardens, and stonewalls that she built.

In addition to their three children, John, Peter, and David, Elizabeth and George took in three foster children, sisters Linda and Susan, and Walter. Linda, Susan, and Walter stayed with the family for about two years.

Elizabeth had worked with wood for years and once the house was finished, she moved on to re-upholstering her love seat, building a recliner from birch and maple and installing shelves on the front house wall, from floor to ceiling. She joined the Lexingston Arts and Crafts Society and was active in the Wood Workers Guild. Eventually, she started teaching woodworking in the basement of the Lincoln Post Office. Most of her students were women and she stressed tool safety to all of her students.

Elizabeth had discovered in her late teens that she was adopted. Over the years, she enjoyed studying genealogy and doing family research, finally meeting her sister Marge in Florida and brother Maynard (now deceased).

One of the great tragedies in her life was the sudden death of her son David in 1994.

Elizabeth is survived by her sons, John and Peter (and his wife Ellen); daughter-in-law Cindy Cook Cooper; grandson David A. Cooper (and his wife Dina); and two great-grandsons, David and William. In addition to her son David, she was pre-deceased by her husband George Elwell Cooper and grand-daughter Sarah.

Elizabeth was always there for her friends, helping them in times of need, taking them shopping, to a doctor's appointment, or just out for a good time. Her humor and good will were constant and infectious. She is missed by all who knew her.

Ella was born in Bias, WV on August 21, 1935 to William Ransom Davis and Anna Mae (Maynard).  She grew up in Delbarton, WV, in Mingo County, along the West Virginia - Kentucky border where her father, a graduate of Marshall University, was a schoolteacher, and principal.  In the summer of 1954, while visiting her sister, Hazel Ruth, in Savannah, GA, she met Louis R. Gentile of Belmont, MA.  He was stationed at Hunter AFB, while serving in the United States Air Force.  They married on October 1, 1955 in Savannah, GA.

A devoted military wife of 20 years, Ella always found a way to make their house a home for their children, regardless of where their military assignments brought them.  In 1973, they settled in Bedford where Ella became a fixture in both Bedford and Hanscom AFB activities.  Over the years, she held various jobs, eventually retiring as Dining Room Facility Manager from Carleton-Willard Village Nursing in Bedford.  As of late, she was a volunteer with Bedford's Council on Aging (COA).

Ella's home was always open, where she loved social gatherings with family and friends, continually leaving the lasting impression of her fun-loving and lively personality on all.  She enjoyed:  bowling, traveling with her famed Wednesday Night Owls to many tournaments; gardening, inspired by her love of growing fresh fruits and vegetables; yard sales, which sometimes added to her treasured doll collection; and the occasional trip to Foxwoods. Furthermore, she could often be found reading novels, which instilled the hobby in her grandchildren.

She is survived by her husband, Louis R. Gentile; four children: daughter, Debra A. Gentile-Garant and husband Paul Garant, of Nashua, NH; sons, Louis R. Gentile II and wife Sharon, of Canton, GA; James V. Gentile and wife Angela, of Box Elder, SD; and Jeffrey D.
